Samburu National Reserve
Samburu National Reserve lies north of Nairobi, adjoining with Buffalo Springs and Shaba National Reserve. The lifeline of these three sanctuaries, the palm fringed Uaso Nyiro River, attracts vast and varied herds of game, abundant bird life and crocodile infested waters. The vegetation in this area is mainly scrub since it is a semi arid region. The game reserves have small hills and open savannah plains. They have terrific viewpoints and are attractive destinations for tour. The calm Ewaso Nyiro River gives the reserves welcoming relief of the hot conditions and helps support a wide variety of game. Samburu and buffalo springs reserves have a large variety of animals.These include lions, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, buffalos and elephants. The game reserves also have dik diks, warthogs and the two zebra breeds, the common zebra and the grevy zebra. The two breeds are exclusive to the South side of the river marching together though they do not interbreed. Samburu and Buffalo springs national reserves have over 400 different species of birds. These include doves, sand grouses, guinea fowls, giant martial eagles and the ostrich. Ewaso Nyiro River is a home for crocodiles and you will not fail to spot them among other wild game. Samburu and Buffalo springs national reserves have several campsites. The sites are located adjacent to the river with renowned facilities. Samburu lodge and buffalo springs lodge are situated in ideal point for game viewing and bird watching. Their facilities are remarkable and swimming pools are available at both lodges.
