Nakuru Kenya

Nakuru is the 4th largest town in Kenya. It is an agricultural town that has a lot of interesting tourist sites. It is 160 kilometres from Nairobi (2 hours drive) and is very accessible from any part of the country.

There are breathtaking views of the Great Rift Valley along the Nairobi to Nakuru road. There is an airstrip in Nakuru which is available for charter flights.

Nakuru’s Tourist Sites:
a) Lake Nakuru is one of the most spectacular tourist sites in the Rift Valley. It is a soda lake that has millions of flamingos along its shores. The number of flamingos on the lake may vary with water and food conditions.

The best point to view the lake is from Baboon Rocks. Carpeting the lake is a constantly moving mass of pink flamingos that frequently make it unrecognisable. It has therefore been described as "the greatest bird spectacle on earth."

b) Lake Nakuru National Park is covered under National Parks in this website and forms another important tourist site in Nakuru.

b) Of interest too is a sanctuary to protect Rothschild giraffes, white and black rhinos adjacent to the lake.

c) Another breathtaking landmark in Nakuru is Menengai Crater. The crater descends 483m down from the rim. It draws over a hundred thousand tourists every year.

Menengai Crater is the second largest surviving volcanic crater in the world. The extinct volcano is 2,490 m high and is also surrounded by a nature reserve.

d) Hyrax Hill Prehistoric Site covered elsewhere in this website is another important tourist site. Its museum exhibits items excavated from nearby sites.

e) Mount Longonot is yet another breathtaking sight. It is the highest of the Rift Valley volcanoes. Its crater is about 1 km in diameter. It forms an almost perfect circle and supports a fertile ecosystem.
