Mount Longonot National Park
Mount Longonot is a dormant stratovolcano located south-east of Lake Naivasha in the Great Rift Valley of Kenya, Africa. The name Longonot is derived from the Masai word Oloonong'ot meaning mountains of many spurs or steep ridges. The park surrounds the volcano and covers 52 km2. Most of it being occupied by Mt. Longonot, a young volcano rising to 2,776 meters above sea level. The sides of the mountain have beautiful V-shaped valleys and ridges. The stony soils have little vegetation but the crater has an impenetrable forest. Visitors can travel to the rim of the crater or inside to the bottom. As you climb, you will pass herds of grazing wildlife or watch buffalo and other animals as they cross the crater floor. The Park offers a wide range of attractions for visitors keen on activity holidays, including hiking, rock climbing, biking as well as bird and wildlife viewing. Longonot National Park has no accommodation within the park however, the fabulous range of nearby hotels, lodges, luxury ranch and homestays around Lake Naivasha provide ample accommodation for all budgets. A forest of small trees covers the crater floor, and small steam vents are found spaced around the walls of the crater. The mountain is home to various species of wildlife, notably zebra and giraffe and buffaloes (droppings on the rim) and hartebeest. Leopards have also been reported but are extremely difficult to spot. Major Attractions: - Extinct volcano and crater forest - Scenic Landscape - Views of lake Naivasha and the Great Rift Valley.
