Mombasa Kenya

Mombasa is the second largest city in Kenya, lying on the Indian Ocean.

It is an island connected to the mainland by bridges and ferries. The town over looks a wide harbour, where commercial shipping mingles with traditional sailing dhows and has a major port and an international airport.

Located on Kenya’s Eastern coastline bordering the Indian Ocean, Mombasa has become popular for its exotic beaches, diverse marine life, world-class hotels and friendly people.

In addition to the beaches, you will enjoy a variety of other interesting sights, such as the Gedi Ruins, a town built entirely from stone, where Swahili people fell under the rule of an Arab Sultan.

Fort Jesus, located near Old Town, was built in the 16th century by the Portuguese. Inside there are torture rooms and prison cells that used to hold captives on their way to slavery in the West.

Mosques, Hindu Temples and Christian churches surround streets that thrive with a world of cultures. The coastal city of Mombasa is one of Africa’s major tourist destinations, with some of the best beaches in the world.

Things to do & See:

  • Beach resorts
  • Water sports
  • Cultural and historical sights - Fort Jesus (a military fort built by the Portugese in 1593, the Old Town and the Gedi Ruins.

    Getting there:
If flying in from outside Africa, you may have to fly to Nairobi and change planes for Mombasa there. However, there are also some charter companies who fly directly to Mombasa.
Please note there are no direct flights from North America or Australia to Kenya.

If you flying in from a neighbouring country, you have several Kenya airports/air strips to choose from as your landing point.

    Getting Around:
Mombasa can be accessed directly from Nairobi by air, road, or rail. Mombasa is the central access point for the entire coastal region and there are scheduled flights to Mombasa.

The easiest ways to get around are by taxi and matatu. Taxis are plenty available. Matatus are private minibuses that run on fixed lines.

Mombasa old town and the area around Fort Jesus are easily explored on foot.
