Lake Bogoria National Park
Lake Bogoria is one of the unique Rift Valley lakes in Kenya. It is found in the North Rift, 25 km south of Baringo Town. The area is popular for the hot springs, gushing geysers and steam as well as bubbling geothermal pools. The fresh water springs at the lake attract plenty of birds and wildlife. Animals in this area include warthogs, antelopes, zebras, dikdik, giraffes, gazelle, baboons, hares, the greater kudu and squirrels. The lake’s ecosystem supports flamingos due to presence of algae in its waters. Lake Bogoria's flamingo population is greater than Lake Nakuru most of the time. The lake is in a hilly and dry area. It is also volcanically active. Its shore has hot geysers that sprinkle water several metres high. The water is hot enough to boil an egg within five minutes. Due to volcanic effect, the geysers have rotten egg like smell that is generally irritating. People occasionally use the water in this area as a remedy for skin diseases. The smell is because of Hydrogen sulphite a compound that results due chemical reactions under influence of high temperatures underneath. The hilly nature of the surrounding terrain gives one a prejudicial sight that the lake waters are dirty due to sediment. However, a closer look at the lake shows a different picture. The lake waters are relatively clean. The wetlands located along the river inlet sieve all the sediments. The lake forms a very attractive tourist destination that one will not easily forget. There are good camp-sites for outdoor picnics and night view of wild animals is possible. You need private transport to access the area. You can also go as part of a tour group. There is an airstrip nearby.
