Diani Beach
Diani Beach is a vibrant paradise beach resort lying on the quiet shores of the Indian Ocean coast of Kenya. Diani beach area includes Tiwi beach, Galu beach, Funzi Island and Kinondo. It is a beautiful beach that is about 25 km long and merges with the small town of Ukunda, south of Mombasa. Diani beach has a clear blue seafront and white-sand. It is known for its coral reefs. Shimba Hills National Reserve is close by and the area is popular for its black and white colobus monkeys. Diani is the most developed beach on the south coast with self-catering resorts, banks, curio shops and supermarkets. It has high-class restaurants, hotels and has two shopping centres. Many hotels in the area are made of local materials - Makuti. South beach area is relatively quiet and ideal for bird watching. There is a lovely bird watching area at the Tiwi River, near the Indian Ocean beach club. Diani offers excellent water-sports. Windsurfing, sailing, snorkelling, water skiing, parasailing and scuba diving are all readily available from most of the hotels along the beach. Popular foods in Diani area include a variety of African and Indian recipes. Ugali and stew are very popular. Spices and coconut are widely used in coastal cuisine. Indian food such as pilau, samosas, chapattis and various sea foods are common. Kebabs are also readily available. Coconut juice locally referred to as ‘madafu’ is commonly used to quench thirst. Swahili is the official language but English is also widely used. Traditional Kenyan music that including Taarab and Benga music are played in Diani reef beach resorts. Tourists are also entertained by Maasai and Samburu dance performances. The entire Kenyan coast including Mombassa and Diani has hot humid weather conditions.
